At the Connected Britain 2024 event, HFCL, a leading technology firm, introduced its latest high-density blown fibre solutions aimed at enhancing digital connectivity across the UK. The new product range promises to accelerate broadband rollouts, align with the Building Digital UK (BDUK) initiative, and support sustainable infrastructure development.
Among the showcased innovations are the Compact Fibre Units (CFUs), designed to offer capacities of up to 12 fibres. These units come in diameters ranging from 1.1mm to 1.6mm, catering to various installation needs. Additionally, HFCL introduced the 36F Fibre Blown Nano cable, which maintains a 2.4mm diameter and is crafted to optimise fibre density in microducts. A notable new addition is the 1F Aerial Drop Cable, approved by Openreach’s PIA, which features a slim 1mm diameter and is designed for use with existing aerial infrastructure.
The CFUs are built with a low-friction HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) jacket, ideal for long-distance installations in microducts. They can be jetted up to 1km at speeds exceeding 80 meters per minute, making them suitable for both final access and distribution networks. The units are available in recyclable cardboard pans or reusable spools, with lengths up to 6km. This design not only improves installation efficiency but also reduces transportation costs and environmental impact.
HFCL’s 36F version of the Fibre Blown Nano cable expands on the success of the 2-24 Fibre range. This cable is engineered with a custom low-friction jacket and HFCL’s high-quality 200-micron single-mode optical fibre. By increasing the fibre count in a 2.4mm unit by 50%, it allows operators to maximise capacity in existing duct networks without the need for new installations.
The new PIA-approved 1F aerial drop cable offers a cost-effective solution for telecom providers. Its compatibility with existing infrastructure and top Aerial Subscriber Nodes (ASNs) facilitates efficient last-mile connectivity, particularly in rural areas. The cable’s design supports high-speed internet access while minimising the use of plastics and utilising recyclable reels.
Mr Harsh Pagay, Executive President of OF & OFC at HFCL, highlighted the company’s extensive experience and commitment to digital transformation. “With over 35 years of expertise, HFCL is a leader in telecom infrastructure. Our new fibre solutions are poised to support the UK’s ambitious digital infrastructure goals and enhance 5G and FTTH deployments,” he said.
Rob Gilbert, VP for the UK & Ireland at HFCL, expressed enthusiasm about the launch. “We are excited to bring our advanced fibre solutions to the UK market. Our focus on eco-friendly technology and local support underscores our commitment to sustainable and efficient network expansion.”
The BDUK initiative aims to extend gigabit-capable connectivity to hard-to-reach areas, targeting 85% coverage by 2025 and nationwide coverage by 2030. HFCL’s new solutions are designed to meet the needs of telcos and MSOs in the UK, Europe, and North America, offering both superior performance and sustainability.
