Expert Reveals How to Save Up to £100 on Flights with Carry-On Luggage

With the cost of travel continuing to rise, one of the simplest ways to reduce your flight expenses is to avoid checked baggage altogether. According to Skyscanner, checking in a bag can add up to €120 (£101) per item on flights from the UK, depending on the airline, significantly increasing the overall cost of your journey.

Luggage shipping specialists at My Baggage have unveiled their top tips for maximising your carry-on space and avoiding extra baggage fees. Here’s how you can keep your costs down while ensuring you have everything you need for your trip.

    1. Utilise Duty-Free Allowances

Many airlines permit passengers to carry a duty-free bag in addition to their carry-on luggage at no extra cost. If you find yourself with additional items that won’t fit in your carry-on, consider picking up a duty-free carrier bag after clearing security and use it to transport your extra belongings. Although you should verify your airline’s policies, this tactic can help you sidestep additional baggage fees even if your carry-on is slightly overstuffed.

    2. Make Use of a Pillow

Most airlines allow passengers to bring a neck pillow without counting it as part of their carry-on allowance. To maximise space, you can remove the cushion from its cover and use it to pack smaller items such as t-shirts and swimsuits. While this can be a clever way to gain extra storage, be sure to check your airline’s regulations as some carriers, such as Ryanair, do not permit this practice.

    3. Wear Your Bulkiest Items

Wearing your heaviest clothing and accessories, such as coats and boots, can free up significant space in your carry-on. While this approach may not be the most comfortable, it can be a practical solution when you’re struggling to fit everything into your allowed baggage. You can always shed layers once you’re settled on the plane.

    4. Skip Packing Toiletries

Toiletries can take up valuable carry-on space and are subject to security restrictions. Consider purchasing essential items like shampoo and deodorant at the airport post-security, where they can be carried in a duty-free bag. Alternatively, buying these items at your destination might be a more economical choice—just check prices online before you travel.

    5. Pack Efficiently

Effective packing is crucial when travelling with only a carry-on. Create a checklist of necessities to avoid overpacking and use vacuum roll bags to compress your clothes, saving space. Be mindful of the carry-on size limits imposed by different airlines. For instance, Ryanair allows a cabin bag of up to 40x20x25cm, while EasyJet permits 45x36x20cm, and Jet2 allows 56x45x25cm.

Paul Stewart, Managing Director of My Baggage, commented: “Opting for carry-on luggage is an excellent way to cut costs while travelling, and it’s simpler than many think. With budget airlines imposing stringent carry-on size limits, creative packing is essential. Sticking to a carry-on not only saves money but also eliminates the wait at baggage claim and reduces the risk of lost luggage. By applying these strategies, travellers can make the most of their carry-on allowance, ensuring a cost-effective and hassle-free journey.”
