Owlet, Inc., a pioneer in smart infant monitoring, has released its latest “State of Parenting Report,” shedding light on the considerable pressures that parents experience during their baby’s first year of life. The findings reveal that, on average, parents lose three hours of sleep each night, contributing to increased levels of stress and fatigue. With 126 million pediatric visits annually, health concerns heavily burden parents, particularly regarding respiratory infections and the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
The report underscores the emotional toll on parents, highlighting that exhaustion is the most common sentiment experienced during this period, with 61% of respondents citing it as a primary feeling. The survey indicates that nearly half (48%) of parents feel overwhelmed, while 32% report anxiety. Compounding these feelings, 86% of parents wake up as many as eight times a night to check on their baby, leaving them in a continuous state of worry.
When asked about what would benefit their mental health but is hardest to achieve, the responses reflected the struggles many face. Fifty-four per cent indicated that more sleep would be helpful, while 43% expressed a need for time for self-care activities or hobbies. Additionally, 39% of parents sought assistance with household chores and responsibilities, and 32% wished for greater support from family, friends, or partners.
Health concerns remain at the forefront of parental anxiety, with nearly 40% of respondents most worried about their newborn contracting illnesses, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or the risk of SIDS. These fears contribute to heightened stress levels, with 53% of parents reporting they get little to no sleep when their baby is unwell, and over 40% feeling extremely anxious in such situations.
Despite these challenges, parents are increasingly relying on technology to help alleviate their anxiety. The report found that nearly three-quarters of parents feel that monitoring technology has significantly reduced their stress levels. Furthermore, half of the parents expressed interest in a monitor that could help them determine when to seek medical attention for their sick baby. Nearly a quarter of parents noted that they wished they had access to medical-grade health monitoring technology at home during these challenging times.
The findings follow the recent launch of ‘Only Owlet’, a global initiative aimed at highlighting the universal experience of parenting and empowering parents to take the best care of their babies. Technologies like the Owlet Dream Sock® offer additional reassurance during parents’ most vulnerable moments, helping them feel more in control of their baby’s health and safety. According to Owlet’s internal survey, 96% of parents using their products reported increased peace of mind, while 94% noted improved sleep quality.
Kurt Workman, Owlet’s Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, commented on the report, stating, “In today’s rapidly changing world, the challenges of parenting have never been more pronounced, and the demands on new parents are greater than ever. This data paints a vivid picture of the modern parenting experience, revealing both the emotional weight and the necessity for solutions.” He reaffirmed Owlet’s commitment to being a reliable source of support for parents as they navigate the complexities of raising the next generation.
